Opening the application:

Using the Menu Bar, Keyboard Shortcuts and Shortcut Menus


  • The Menu Bar has functions grouped by categories

  • Keyboard Shortcuts use letters, numbers and modifier keys

  • A Shortcut Menu can be accessed by right-clicking (Control-clicking) a specific area of the interface.

  • Open FCPX

  • Open Event Library

  • Create new event with the following file path name: 15 Shots_Student's Name_Period_Date

    • File > New Event

    • Option N

    • Control click (right click) in the Event Library

  • Import images from the 15 Shots Assignment

    • File > Import > Import Files

    • Shift Command I

  • In the Import Files window

    • Select Add to existing Event and point it to the Event you previously created.

    • Select "Copy files to Final Cut Events folder" and

    • "Import folders as Keyword Collections."

    • Do not select other options.

  • Open the Project Library and create a new project:

    • File > New Project

    • Command N

    • Click the + sign

    • Control click (right click) in the Project Library

  • Name your project: 15 Shots_Student's Name_Period_Date

    • Be sure your Default Event is the one you created.

    • In the Starting Timecode, change to hour one: From 00:00:00:00 to 01:00:00:00


    • Keep Video Properties at Set automatically based on first video clip.

    • Audio and Render Properties, select custom and set the following:

      • Audio Channels Stereo

      • Audio Sample Rate 48 kHz

      • Render Format Apple ProRes 422

Drag an image from the Event Library into the Primary Storyline of your project and have FCPX automatically set the properties.

  • Click the music icon in the Toolbar to open the Music and Sound Browser.

  • Choose a music file and drag it under the image in the Primary Storyline.

  • Edit the music file to be 30 seconds to 1 minute in duration.

  • Use the keyboard shortcuts Command + and Command - to zoom in and out of the Primary Storyline respectively.

  • Move the playhead to the point on the Primary Storyline where you want to edit the audio track.

  • Navigate to the Toolbar and select the Blade Tool in the Tools Palette.

  • Reselect the Select tool or press A on the keyboard.

  • Cut the track, and delete the unwanted portion of the audio track.

  • Navigate on the Toolbar and select the Text Browser (The T icon).
  • Scroll down to the Custom template
  • Double click the template to load it onto the Primary Storyline at the position of the playhead.

  • Press the i icon on the Toolbar to access the properties browser.

  • Investigate the parameters in the Title, Text, Video and Info Tabs.

  • Go to Share on the finder menu and open Export Media - Command E

  • Make sure your media is properly labeled, and save in your documents folder.
